New Revised Rule for Homestead Exemption in Ohio
As reported previously, the law governing qualifications for the Ohio Homestead Exemption has been limited through the use of an income qualification for most new applicants after January 1, 2014. Previously, homeowners, 65 years of age or older in 2013, had until December 2013 to file an application with the county auditor to be approved for the Homestead Exemption without income qualifications. This time period has now been extended through the authorization of “late application” which must be filed on or before June 2, 2014. In order to qualify for the late application, the homeowner must have turned 65 years of age on or prior to December 31, 2013. This is a one-time opportunity to apply and be approved without the income qualification as long as you own and live in the same home as you did on January 1, 2013.
