Estate Planning – What is Also Important

In establishing an estate plan, of critical importance is the creation of three, sometimes overlooked documents, which may have more value than the estate plan itself.  These documents include a Durable General Power of Attorney, a Living Will and a Durable Health Care Power of Attorney.  Each has utilities that function during your lifetime and may have multiple occasions on which it is used to express your intentions with respect to the medical care which you receive and the end of life choices which you desire.  In addition the Durable Power of Attorney enables a trusted designated attorney-in-fact to act on your behalf should you be unable to do so either by convenience or necessity.  It is also important to update these documents periodically with current information and consider them as part of any estate planning review.
